Job description

Dovetail is the world's leading customer intelligence platform, helping thousands of teams build better products. From user feedback and customer interviews to support tickets and sales calls, Dovetail helps customers take unstructured, sometimes messy feedback around their business and convert this into actionable insights.

Driven by ambition and innovation, the Dovetail team is customer-obsessed and on a mission to help the world improve the quality of every thing. Join the ranks of Atlassian, The New York Times, Spotify, Universal, Porsche, Starbucks, and thousands more as they put their customer first with Dovetail and improve the quality of their thing.

We're all about sweating the details on delightful experiences, tackling ambitious technical challenges head-on, and constantly delivering customer value. As an Engineering Manager for Platform, you will be a critical part of leading the team that provides the foundation for all of Dovetail's product innovation.

Responsibilities

What you'll do

  • Build and lead a high-performing platform engineering team. You'll hire, develop, and retain exceptional DevOps and SRE engineering talent. You create an environment where engineers feel empowered, motivated, and supported to build world-class systems and infrastructure. You balance technical leadership with people management, ensuring your team has the right mix of guidance and autonomy.
  • Drive the strategic vision for Dovetail's core infrastructure. You will own the roadmap that improves the reliability, scalability, and security of our platform. You'll partner with product engineering teams to understand their needs, improve the developer experience, and ensure our Kubernetes-based platform provides a world-class foundation for their features.
  • Champion a culture of operational excellence and DevOps. You'll set high standards for platform reliability, security, and performance, establishing clear SLOs and error budgets. You will lead the team in implementing best practices for CI/CD, monitoring, incident response, and on-call, acting as a role model for the entire engineering organization.
  • Identify, prioritize and solve systemic technical challenges. You are in constant pursuit of our next big systemic challenges with solutions that are built for scale. You not only proactively raise these issues, but work closely with product and engineering leadership to explore solutions, determine priorities, and lead projects to solve them.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team on tough challenges. You will spend significant time collaborating with the team to support their most difficult decisions. You can effectively build trust with engineers by having an empathetic, supportive approach to helping them with their biggest challenges. You don't just solve the problem, you show others how it can be done.

Job requirements

Your background

  • Experience in back-end and systems engineering. You'll have experience with technologies like AWS, containerization (Kubernetes/EKS), PostgreSQL, Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, Pulumi), CI/CD pipelines, and observability tooling. We don't expect you to be an expert in all of these.
  • Deep understanding of DevOps and SRE principles. You have a proven track record of building and managing reliable, scalable infrastructure in a cloud environment. You're experienced with modern practices like CI/CD, observability, and incident management.
  • Excellent, concise communicator. You can distill complicated challenges down to their simplest expression and articulate effort vs. impact tradeoffs with stakeholders across the company.
  • Experience managing complex infrastructure projects. You'll have the ability to own the delivery of platform initiatives, break down requirements, and provide reasonable estimates. You have worked on projects with stakeholders across multiple teams.
  • You are pragmatic and flexible. Like your new teammates, you're used to doing what's necessary to get the job done. You are comfortable with ambiguity, resourceful in solving problems, and can readily adjust to shifting priorities.
  • You lead by setting a high bar for quality. You share our keen eye for quality and are committed to excellence. What you ship is top-notch, and you inspire your team to prioritise quality, even if it means reducing scope.
